July 18, 2008-In a see-saw battle featuring two of the Women's Premier
Soccer League best teams, the Long Island Fury tied the Philadelphia
Liberty, 1-1, in the Philly suburb of West Chester tonight. The Fury are now
9-1-1 while the Liberty are 4-1-5.
Fury forward Leigh Anne Cummings scored on a header during a goal mouth
scramble in the 48th minute. Cody Newman received the assist on the goal.
"A good result for us on the road, especially missing six players partly due
to National Team commitments," commented Fury head coach Paul Riley.
The last match of the regular season is this Tuesday, July 22 with a 4 pm
kick-off at Mitchel Athletic Complex against Philadelphia. This game is a
make-up of the 2-2 affair between the two teams that was halted midway
through the first half on June 14 due to lightning.
"After five consecutive road games, it will be nice to come home," Coach
Riley concluded. "That game will be a good tune-up for us for the playoffs."

July 11, 2008-The battle for New York supremacy in the National Premier
Soccer League was played tonight across the Hudson River in Frank Sinatra's
hometown of Hoboken, New Jersey. Start spreading the news that it was the
Long Island Academy which proved it is A-number one, top of the list with a
4-1 defeat of the New York Athletic Club at Stevens Tech.
The Academy cliches the Mid-Atlantic Division with an undefeated record of
7-0-2. NYAC drops to 2-4-2.
Down 1-0, the Academy bounced back on a Tom Lobben penalty kick midway
through the first half after a handball in the penalty area.
Long Island's three goals in the second half provided the winning margin.
Midfielder Jose Batista scored in the 60th minute, Keith Detelj ten minutes
later, then Batista closed out the scoring in the 81st minute on a penalty
kick after being tripped near the NYAC goal.
"Overall, a very strong performance after being down 1-0," commented Long
Island Academy FC Director of Football Paul Riley. "Defender Randy
Jean-Baptiste had a strong game, captain Danny Leon again played well in
midfield and Shaun Higgins had a good game at forward. We overpowered NYAC
in the second half as they kind of ran out of steam."
Academy goalkeeper Michael Hurley made six saves.
"Michael has played well in goal for us the past two games," Riley
concluded.
The Academy victory tonight helped erase the memory of a frustrating 0-0
stalemate against NYAC on June 20 in which Long Island dominated play but
could not score.
The Academy's sister team, the Long Island Fury (7-1-0) conclude their
regular season with four matches in the next week. The Fury plays at the
Central Delaware Future tomorrow night, then at the Northampton Laurels in
Pennsylvania on Sunday night.
On Wednesday night, June 16, they return to the friendly confines of the
Mitchel Athletic Complex with a 6:00 pm encounter with the Philadelphia
Liberty. This game is a make-up of the June 14 game at Mitchel postponed
midway through the first half due to lightning with the score knotted at
2-2. The Fury conclude their regular season with a match next Friday night,
July 18 at the Liberty in Philadelphia.
