news from the long island fury!

April 21, 2008 - The Long Island Fury is thrilled to announce that midfielder/forward Karin Simonian will be playing for the Women's Premier Soccer League team again this year. Karin will be all of 15 years old and again playing against opponents a decade older when the WPSL season begins next month.

When asked to describe her best moment on a soccer field, Karin stated, "Playing with the Long Island Fury last year. It was so exciting playing with some great players like Kelly Henderson, Lorraine Quinn plus Christina and Gina DiMartino. Then, after I scored in one of the home games, some kids came up to me and asked for my autograph. I thought that was pretty cool!"

The Westbury resident studies at W.T. Clarke High School and plays on Long Island Junior Soccer League teams Albertson Fury 89, Albertson Fury Premier 92 plus the Region 1 (Northeast United States) team.

"Karin has a unique quality--she can change the game at any time. Fantastic shot with a great goal sense makes her prolific around the box," Long Island Fury coach Paul Riley commented. "She is intelligent, crafty and causes unbelievable problems for opposing defences. A big-time player with a big-time future."

Karin has played four years for the Eastern New York Olympic Development Program team and participated in the 2007 National Team Camp. The sky is the limit for Karin, who scored two goals for the Fury as a 14-year-old last year and was named All-County as a High School Freshman.

April 8, 2008 - The Long Island Fury of the Women's Premier Soccer League is very pleased to announce that 17-year-old midfielder Nicole Choffel will return for the 2008 season. Nicole scored one goal last year, on a 35-yard blast at the New England Mutiny on June 16.

"Nicole has developed into an excellent player with a brilliant soccer mind. She is simple, great positionally and keeps the team ticking," Long Island Fury coach Paul Riley commented. "She is a superb passer of the ball and knows how to get the most out of her teammates."

The Bellerose resident attends the Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica Estates, where she received the All-American Achievement Scholar Award.

Nicole was the Hilltoppers' Most Valuable Player for four consecutive seasons from 2004 to 2007. Other awards include the Scholar-Athlete Award from 2004 to 2007, the Best Offensive Player in 2006 and 2007, Times Ledger All-Queens First Team from 2005 to 2007 and Times Ledger Player of the Year.

Nicole led Mary Louis to the NSCHSGAA Class A championship two of the last three years, scoring the winning goal in overtime on November 1, 2007 against Archbishop Molloy. She will be playing for the Hofstra Pride next year.

Nicole also competes for Long Island Junior Soccer League team Albertson Fury '89. She says that her best moment ever on a soccer field was winning the State Cup with Albertson in 2006.

April 22, 2008-The Long Island Fury is very pleased to announce that Madison Haller is joining the team for the 2008 Women's Premier Soccer League season.

The 16-year-old midfielder will make the 110-mile round-trip commute from her home in South Salem, which she currently does a few times a week to play with the Long Island Junior Soccer League's Albertson Fury '89 and Albertson Fury '90. Her family's home is just a short corner kick from the Connecticut border.

"Maddie is one of those players that every team needs and relies on. Excellent speed, great determination and is one of the best penalty area-to penalty area players you can find," commented Long Island Fury head coach Paul Riley.

"Maddie does an amazing of work in a game and can do a job equally on both sides of the ball," Coach Riley continued. "She's destined to be a fabulous college player and, with her training habits, how far she goes is up to her. She is the ultimate team player."

Madison studies at the Harvey School, where she's a member of the Honor Roll and was also honored as the Cavaliers' Girls Varsity Soccer Most Valuable Player. She received Harvey's Scholar/Athlete Award as well. Madison says her best moment on a soccer field up to now was defeating the rival East Meadow Shooting Stars in the semifinals of the State Cup.

albertson sc chosen to join us soccer development academy!

Albertson SC became the fourth club from Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association that has been selected to join U.S. Soccer’s Development Academy.

The Long Island Junior Soccer League club was one of 13 teams added by U.S. Soccer Tuesday, bringing the total to 64 Academy teams.

Albertson joined FC Westchester, B.W. Gottschee and Metropolitan Oval/Brooklyn Knights as ENY teams in the competition.

The Development Academy concept is a comprehensive program providing more than just improved competition in the development of players. It involves the training of players, coaches and referees, scouting by U.S. National Team and college coaches, and the sharing of the latest information and concepts on performance training and expertise development.

“The Development Academy has been implemented to shift the focus of the young elite player toward a ‘meaningful training and competition’ model, with the U.S. Soccer Federation taking the initiative to extend its National Team program into the daily environment of the elite player,” U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati said. “The response thus far has been unprecedented for a youth initiative.”

The admission process was extremely competitive with more than 150 applications being submitted in less than two months. The competition component of the Academy will feature 63 clubs, representing 24 states and the District of Columbia, plus the U.S. National Team from U.S. Soccer’s Residency Program, playing at the Under-15/16 and U-17/18 age levels.

Match Fit Academy FC (New Jersey)
Pateadores Soccer Club (California)
Real So Cal (California)
San Diego Surf (California)
Solar Soccer Club (Texas)

Objective -The focus of the Academy is on player development and providing players with the best possible opportunity to develop to the highest level they are capable of achieving.

* Standards: A minimum requirement of three training sessions and one rest day per week.
* Selection: U.S. Soccer coaches selected the Academy clubs from more than 150 applications.
* Age Groups: U-15/16 and U-17/18 teams (minimum roster of 20 players); providing opportunities for more than 2,000 players.
